Past Events - Our Footprints
We welcome new members with a moving installation ceremony and also with fun and informal get together coffees and activities. We received the traveling trophy for most new members in 2023.
Members of Jean Marie Cardinell Chapter volunteered their time and talents and decorated the Historic Jordan House parlor for Christmas in 2022.
Our chapter was honored to be a part of the "Final Salute" ceremony at the Iowa Military Cemetery in 2022. Our member (first on left) carried the flag for the Veteran who was interred. Seven Veterans with no living family members were given a patriotic and dignified burial.
In May of 2022, our chapter was invited by the Sons of the American Revolution to witness the unveiling of a memorial marker on the Mississippi River honoring our chapter's namesake, Jean Marie Cardinell.
At the 2023 Spring Iowa Society Daughters of the American Revolution state conference, our chapter was recognized with the award for the MOST new members over the past year.
The Jean Marie Cardinell chapter celebrated its eighty year anniversary in 2021 with friendships, food and fun. We recognized our longest serving member and members with 50 and 40 year DAR membership anniversaries and welcomed our newest members!

Our Project Patriot Committee chair, provided leadership to recognize and honor our active-duty military in 2020 and 2021. Our chapter members donated hundreds of items that were transported to the Blue Star Mothers who then distributed to deployed soldiers. Poppies and a lesson plan were provided to teachers on Veterans Day. In December, we were happy to partner with Camp Dodge Officers to provide Christmas gift baskets to well-deserving local military families.
Our chapter is always well represented at the Iowa Society DAR (ISDAR)
Fall Forum and the Annual Conference.

The Jean Marie Cardinell Chapter, NSDAR, actively celebrated the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution starting back in 2019. We gathered together and watched a movie about the struggle to get the vote. We held three field trips with lunches. We went to an Art Gallery in West Des Moines and enjoyed a history lesson from a local artist who painted nineteen suffrage leaders. We traveled to the Iowa State Capitol and viewed the bas relief artwork depicting the passage of the torch from suffrage leaders to the next generation. We traveled to Boone, Iowa, and viewed the memorial plaque that firmly stands to educate us about a monumental "first" suffrage parade in America. We hosted an energetic speaker in the fall of 2019 at our chapter meeting. In February of 2020, many of our members gathered with hundreds of other Iowa women at the Iowa State University Memorial Union for a fantastic day-long conference. We had many more activities planned, but alas, the COVID-19 pandemic took over and canceled our plans. We created and distributed a 2020 calendar that included the important dates associated with the passage of the 19th Amendment and the stories, often untold, of the women in Iowa who made a difference.
The year 2020 will be one to remember, or maybe forget! In June, we met virtually and installed new officers. By August, we were able to meet in person again but wore masks and maintained social distancing. We met on August 18, 2020, exactly one hundred years from the day that Tennessee ratified the 19th Amendment. We celebrated by wearing purple and yellow and eating purple and yellow frosted cupcakes. We were determined to make 2020 a good year for our chapter.
